NATIVE DOGS OF TURKEY
 
Turkey, which dates back to ancient times, is rich in animal genetic resources with broad geographical location and terrain. Dogs constitute an important part of these gene resources. Dog breeds can be classified as follows in Turkey; Endemic breeds that are ancient mastiff-type huge dogs, the other breeds that coming to Anatolia with migration like, the Kangal is the most known as the best sheep flock guard dog all over the World and the Akbaş is the second most known as sheep flock guard dog around the world, some dog genotypes obtained by selection or gene mutation like, the Malaklı is not dated back ancient times but it consists of dogs that are selected by looking for their strong, courageous and aggressive characteristics by mating their Kangal dogs with mastiff-type dogs, also there are some breeds originally has external origin but raised for a long time in Turkey affected with the environment, selected and crossbred ones, which gains different morphological and genetic traits and became a native dog breeds like Zağar and Tarsus Çatal Burun, except those; dogs with a foreign origin but not scientifically defined like Kars dog and other shepherd dogs. In this paper, information about Turkey’s domestic dogs was reviewed.
